Choosing a Bookkeeping Course Isn't Just About Choosing a Qualification Choosing a bookkeeping course involves more than deciding which qualification to pursue. Your experience, career ambitions, personal circumstances and preferred way of learning all matter. We explore what to consider when choosing a course, why the right support makes a difference and how a conversation with Ideal Schools can help you find the route that suits you.

When you start looking at bookkeeping courses, it's tempting to begin with the qualifications.

ICB or AAT? Which level? Which course? How long will it take?

They're perfectly reasonable questions. But after more than 40 years of helping people study bookkeeping and accounting, we've learned that the most useful question is often a different one.

What are you hoping to achieve, and what's the best way for you to get there?

Because two people looking at exactly the same qualification can have very different reasons for wanting it, and very different needs when it comes to studying.

First, let's talk about you

One of the things our Managing Director and Tutor, Brian McVean, particularly enjoys is talking to people who are considering studying with Ideal Schools.

Some have already researched their options thoroughly and know precisely which qualification they want. Others aren't sure where to begin.

And that's absolutely fine.

Perhaps you're thinking about a complete career change. Maybe you already work with invoices, accounts or payroll and would like a qualification to recognise and develop your skills.

You might be returning to work after a career break, helping with the finances of a family business or considering setting up your own bookkeeping practice.

Those are quite different starting points.

That's why a conversation about courses often begins with Brian asking about your experience and what you'd like to do in the future.

There's little point recommending a qualification without understanding what you want it to help you achieve.

The right starting point matters

It's natural to wonder whether you should begin with the basics or move straight into a more advanced course.

If you're completely new to bookkeeping, building a solid understanding of the fundamentals can give you confidence as you progress.

If you already have relevant experience, however, starting at the very beginning may not necessarily be the most appropriate route.

Equally, recognising some of the terminology doesn't always mean you're ready to skip ahead.

An experienced tutor can help you think through what you already know, identify possible gaps and choose a starting point that makes sense.

The aim isn't to get you enrolled on the highest-level course possible. It's to help you begin at the right level for you.

A course needs to fit your life, too

Most of our students have plenty going on beyond their studies.

They're working, raising families, running businesses, caring for relatives or juggling commitments that don't always fit neatly into a timetable.

For many, that's exactly why distance learning is attractive.

Studying from home gives you the freedom to work at times that suit you, without having to attend a classroom every week.

But flexibility doesn't mean you suddenly have unlimited hours in the day!

It's worth being realistic about how much time you can devote to studying and what sort of routine will work for you.

Some students make steady progress with shorter sessions during the week. Others prefer to set aside time at weekends.

And life doesn't always cooperate with even the best study plan.

Having a course and a support structure that can accommodate those realities makes a difference.

Think about how you like to learn

It's easy to focus on what a course teaches without thinking about how you'll actually experience the learning.

Do you enjoy working independently through written materials? Do practical examples help things click into place? Would you feel more confident knowing you could pick up the phone and ask a tutor to explain something?

Perhaps it's been years since you last studied and you're wondering whether you'll remember how to do it.

These are all useful things to consider.

At Ideal Schools, we provide structured learning materials alongside personal tutor support. Our tutors answer questions, explain difficult topics and provide individual feedback on students' work.

We know that sometimes a student needs a technical explanation. On another occasion, they might simply need a little reassurance that they're making progress.

Both matter.

If you'd like to know more about the people behind that support, read our blog on why personal support matters in bookkeeping training.

And there's no such thing as a silly question. If something doesn't make sense, we'd much rather you asked than spent an entire afternoon worrying about it!

The qualification matters. So does the provider.

Recognised qualifications provide the knowledge and credentials you need to progress in bookkeeping and accounting.

At Ideal Schools, we offer both ICB bookkeeping courses and AAT courses, with different routes depending on your experience and ambitions.

But here's something worth remembering when comparing training providers.

The qualification sets the destination. The provider shapes much of the journey.

Two providers may offer the same qualification, but the experience of studying with them can be quite different.

Before enrolling, it's worth asking how the course works in practice.

Who will answer your questions? What feedback will you receive? What happens when you get stuck? And how easy is it to speak to somebody who knows what they're talking about?

Price matters, of course, but so does understanding what you're getting for your money.

At Ideal Schools, personal support isn't an optional extra. It's central to the way we've worked with students since 1983.

We're a family-run training provider, and many of the people you'll speak to have spent years helping students work through exactly the challenges you may be anticipating.

We want you to feel comfortable asking questions, whether you're considering enrolling or already halfway through your course.

You don't need to have everything figured out

One of the things we'd particularly like prospective students to understand is that you don't have to know exactly which course you want before contacting us.

That's what we're here to help you work out.

You might discover that a qualification you hadn't previously considered is a better fit. Or that the course you had in mind is exactly the right choice.

Either way, a useful conversation should leave you feeling better informed and more confident about your options.

You can explore our full range of courses or find out more about how studying from home with Ideal Schools works.

And if you'd rather speak to somebody first, we'd be delighted to hear from you.

Because choosing a bookkeeping course isn't simply about finding a qualification that looks good on your CV.

It's about finding a route that works for you, with the right people alongside you as you learn.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right bookkeeping course?

Start by considering your existing experience and what you'd like to achieve. Think about how much time you can devote to studying, how you prefer to learn and what support you might need. A conversation with an experienced course adviser can help you identify a suitable route.

Should I choose ICB or AAT?

Both offer recognised qualifications, but the most appropriate route depends on your experience and career ambitions. ICB focuses on professional bookkeeping, while AAT also offers broader accounting pathways. We can help you explore which option makes sense for you.

Does the training provider matter if the qualification is the same?

Absolutely. Course materials, tutor access, feedback and the overall learning experience can vary considerably. It's worth understanding how a provider supports its students before deciding.

Can I study bookkeeping while working full-time?

Yes. Distance learning can be particularly suitable for people balancing study with employment and other commitments. The key is finding a realistic study routine and having appropriate support available.

Do I need to know which course I want before contacting Ideal Schools?
