Paul Maddison Everyone who comes to bookkeeping later in life brings the expertise of their former profession.....

Everyone who comes to bookkeeping later in life brings the expertise of their former profession to bear on behalf of their clients. For some, that experience is more useful than others.

In the case of Paul Maddison, who had over 30 years of experience as a B2B (business to business) banker, helping the growth and development of SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) for most of the major UK banks, he was ahead of the curve.

Paul left the world of banking to forge a path for himself in early 2016, and turned to Ideal Schools to obtain the qualifications he needed to set up his practice as a member of the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB).

Paul said: “I found Ideal Schools online, and they were great. There was no hard sell from Brian McVean, my tutor. He listened to what I wanted to do, and put me in touch with alumni of the college who were successful in their practices, so I could see for myself what could be done.”

Offering ‘bookkeeping with a difference’, Paul has been growing his practice, Bookkeeping Intelligence in Basingstoke, on the basis of offering an experienced analysis of the books as well as meeting the legal obligations incumbent on all businesses.Bookkeeping Intelligence has 20 clients already, and has taken on its first employee, with plans to take on a second within the next few months in order to keep up with demand.

He said: “There aren’t many bookkeepers who can offer 30 years of practical experience in the growth and development of small businesses, so I like to think I have a bit extra to offer, as a business adviser, as well as a bookkeeper.

“The ‘books’ of any company are a wealth of information that can be mined, developed, and turned into a resource for that company to move forward with, and that’s what I offer. Not just keeping books, but turning them into a valuable asset.”

Paul talks about his ‘passion for working with numbers’ and enjoys developing the raw data of the books into a valuable and deployable asset for any small business.
