Tracy Bland – From Corporate Finance to Business Owner with Brigg Bookkeeping Ltd At Ideal Schools, we love sharing the real stories behind our students’ journeys—the moments of decision, the challenges, and the triumphs. This time, we’re shining the spotlight on Tracy Bland, a finance professional who walked away from a demanding corporate career to build a flexible, fulfilling bookkeeping business. Her story is one of adaptability, perseverance, and the power of making bold career moves to fit life’s changing priorities.

A Career in Finance, A Life on the Move

Tracy has worked in finance since 1998, primarily within industry, including manufacturing, textiles, and even a stint in the NHS. With AAT and later CIMA exams under her belt, she built an impressive career, working at a high level and travelling extensively. Over the years, she lived all over the UK, moving with her roles and embracing the challenges of corporate finance.

But when she became a mother, the realities of that lifestyle hit home. The expectation to travel so much wasn’t feasible anymore. She took a step back from her leadership role and based herself at Head Office, but the corporate environment, with late nights and weekends at month-end, didn’t suit her anymore.

She needed a career shift. And after two decades in finance, what did she try next?

“It was never going to be forever,” Tracy admits. “I just needed to see if I could do something completely different.”

But the real turning point came when she realised that self-employment was the only option that truly fit her family’s needs. With two young children—one of whom had health challenges—she needed a career that worked around her life, not the other way around.

Finding the Right Path with ICB and Ideal Schools

Once Tracy decided to go back into finance, she knew bookkeeping was the way forward. She wanted hands-on knowledge, especially in payroll, and needed a qualification that would allow her to gain a practice licence quickly. While AAT required post-qualification experience, ICB offered a direct route, making it the perfect choice.

That decision led her to Ideal Schools—a choice backed by glowing recommendations from local bookkeepers.

“There were quite a few people near me who’d studied with Ideal Schools, and everyone spoke so highly of them. Even those who hadn’t studied with Ideal still recommended them!”

Distance learning was a whole new world for Tracy. Having previously sat handwritten exams in halls, adjusting to online study and remote exams took time. At first, she hesitated to reach out for support, unsure of how much help she could ask for. But Ideal Schools’ tutors made all the difference.

“Brian kept telling me, ‘Why are you struggling? Just give us a call—that’s what we’re here for.’  And once I did, everything got easier. It wasn’t just about learning the material; they taught me how to study efficiently, how to fit it into my life, and what really mattered for passing the exams and working in practice.”

She studied wherever she could—even in her car, whispering on the phone to Brian so she wouldn’t wake her sleeping child!

Building Brigg Bookkeeping Ltd

Fast-forward to today, and Tracy is the proud owner of Brigg Bookkeeping Ltd, serving a range of clients, particularly in the trades sector.

Starting a business from scratch wasn’t easy. There was the challenge of running a business while mastering the technical aspects of bookkeeping. But her determination paid off. Tracy has built a profitable, efficient, and client-focused practice without the burden of unnecessary software or overheads.

“It’s about keeping things smart. I don’t use systems that don’t integrate well. I want things to be sleek, efficient, and tailored to the client’s needs.”

The Power of Mentorship with Paula Veysey-Smith

A key turning point in Tracy’s journey was seeking mentorship from Paula Veysey-Smith of MPower Mentoring. With Paula’s guidance, she was able to navigate business decisions, set priorities, and gain confidence as a business owner.

“I initially sought out Paula to help me manage the growth of my business. She’s been invaluable in helping me focus on what matters most. Her advice has been a game-changer.”
